Designing Your Kansas City Home’s Exterior: Textures

Table of Contents

We discussed siding options in the “color” portion of our “Designing Your Home’s Exterior” series, but color is just one part of design. The texture of the siding can greatly impact a home’s overall curb appeal. Woodgrain or stone textures are popular exterior home product options because they add character and depth to the aesthetic of the home. Today, we’ll discuss different textures you might choose for your home’s exterior and various siding options available in Kansas City.

Smooth and Sleek

One type of texture you might choose for your home’s exterior is…well, no texture at all. To some, smooth and simple vinyl options are appealing, minimalist, and modern. You can find options like these from Mastic Vinyl, and if that’s your taste, it’s a valid choice. However, Mastic also has vinyl siding options that take on an imitation wood texture, because while a smooth surface suits some, it’s not what comes to mind when we think of texture.

The Feel of Wood

Wood has a classic texture that many homeowners find attractive, but wood siding itself is often not the best option. Not only is it the most expensive option, but it must be constantly stained and heavily maintained to stand up to Kansas City weather. A more efficient option that offers a similar texture is James Hardie’s Fiber Cement. Hardie fiber cement siding is designed to have the look and feel of wood, but it’s much more durable than both wood and vinyl. It’s wildly popular and its quality is undisputed, which is why it’s won the Good Housekeeping Seal and has been shown to offer the greatest ROI of available siding options. If you like the texture of wood, this is the siding to consider.

Stucco and Stone

If you prefer the smooth texture referenced earlier, but want something more elegant than vinyl lap siding, consider stucco siding. Stucco siding is different from other siding options in that it offers a completely smooth surface, made with acrylic stucco. Sometimes it’s used in conjunction with stone siding, and the combination of textures can make your home a stand-out on your street. However, the entire exterior doesn’t have to be covered in stucco and stone siding. Often, we install stucco and stone on the front of a home to increase curb appeal and give it that extra WOW factor! To complete the exterior, James Hardie Fiber Cement is the durable choice.

If your home’s exterior feels a little lacking, you may need to add some texture. Contact Johnson County Siding & Window Co., Inc. today for more information about your siding options. Read our blog for the conclusion of our series on “Designing Your Home’s Exterior”.
