For adding value and convenience to your home, there’s nothing like installing siding. In addition to protecting your home’s exterior, you eliminate the need to paint and also add to the resale value.

Siding is available in several different materials, so you need to understand your siding choices so you can decide which one best suits your needs.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding remains the most popular siding choice for U.S. homeowners. The rugged vinyl material resists nicks and scratches, withstands extreme temperatures, and is available in a broad spectrum of colors. Vinyl siding is easy to install, too. According to the 2015 Remodeling Impact Report issued by the National Association of Realtors, 83 percent of the cost of replacing your home with vinyl siding will be recouped at resale.

On the downside, the panels are usually sized at 12-foot lengths, so you might see seams unless you opt for the additional expense of longer panels.

Fiber Cement

Remodeling magazine’s “Cost Versus Value Report”, fiber cement siding delivers the most ROI at resale, at 84.3 percent—25 percent more than adding a bathroom! Fiber cement is a combination of cement, clay, wood fibers, and sand, producing a material that resists fire, termites, and rot. The mixture can be molded, so you can have siding that has the appearance of wood, stucco, or even masonry.

However, fiber cement costs about 50 percent more to install than vinyl siding. Still, bear in mind that great ROI!

Both vinyl siding and fiber cement siding add lasting value and reduce the maintenance on your home.
