Retrofit repair
If only certain parts of your stucco have been affected by water damage, then you can have a retrofit repair done. Basically, a professional will replace or repair any sheathing, insulation or framing that was affected by the water damage. Once a retrofit repair is done, you should do a moisture inspection every three to five years. A retrofit repair is much more affordable than a full replacement – you could save between 30 and 40 percent of the cost.
Wall-to-wall repair
A wall-to-wall repair falls somewhere between a retrofit repair and a complete replacement. Basically, the stucco of one an entire wall is removed along with the damaged sheathing, insulation and framing and replaced with new stucco, but the rest of the exterior is left untouched. This is done when there is there is a lot of damage to a single wall, to the point where it doesn’t make sense to try and retrofit it.
Full tear off and replacement
If there are high levels of moisture throughout numerous locations in the home’s stucco, then your best bet is probably to tear off the old stucco and have it completely replaced. There’s no point in having patches of your original stucco remaining if the extent of the water damage is that bad.
